Quiet Time with Pratyahara
The idea of withdrawing your senses—closing off your sight and hearing, not speaking, remaining still—might seem a little boring; you’re not really doing anything. And that’s the point. By not doing, we notice more. We experience subtleties, and we can change our relationship with the world around us.
Your pratyahara assignment today is simple: gradually withdraw your senses. Either during your regular yoga breathing practice or at a separate time, take a comfortable seat. You can also lie down. (You may fall asleep, so set a timer for ten minutes.)
First, make sure the room is quiet; silence your phone for all calls, texts, and alerts. This allows your sense of hearing to relax.
Next, feel yourself settling into your physical position; if sitting, make sure your spine is lengthened without being stiff. Place your hands on your lap or knees, wherever they’re comfortable. If lying down, let your arms rest at your sides. Know that for this period of time, you don’t have to move or do anything.
Now close your eyes. Let your eyes rest. Let your eyelids release, knowing there’s nothing you need to see at this time.
Do a few rounds of three-part breathing, and then let your breathing find its natural rhythm. Allow yourself to enjoy the stillness around you and within you.
Your timer will wake your sense of hearing. Open your eyes slowly, and move mindfully to shut the timer off. Let your senses gradually return to their waking, active state. Record how this practice felt in your Yoga Mind journal.
